When it comes to travel, I guess you could say that I have a passion for it!

Originally from Germany, I have lived and worked over the past 16 years in Africa, Asia and Australia! How it all came about is a long story, let’s just say that the travel bug bit me after university so I moved to South Africa. The next thing you know it’s 9 years later, I am meeting my Australian husband in Africa and we decided to move to Asia! That was an adventure in its own right and as you see, life took a couple of happy, yet unexpected turns.

We both have been working in the tourism industry for more than a decade and we both love to travel! During my time working in tourism, I was lucky enough to explore some amazing places, meet some fascinating people and having had some once-in-a-lifetime experiences!

Sharing the love

For a while now, I have been wanting to share my experiences in a blog! I have been dabbling with this idea for many years now and let me tell you – this isn’t my first attempt! It always starts with the best intentions, but you know how it goes! Work gets in the way, there is not enough time and in the end, you start to think that your idea isn’t that interesting after all.

An Idea is Born!

Well, the year 2020 took care of time constraints and I found myself out of a job! With plenty of time on my hands, like many of us, I was able to process and re-evaluate what is important in life. And in travel!

The slow travel idea was born with a friend in Germany who owns an Africa travel specialist business. During the first lockdown, we spoke a lot and she already had some slow travel itineraries in her portfolio for Africa. I loved the idea and we decided to expand the product range into Asia, which would be my area of expertise. I spent months of work and enthusiasm, preparing quite a few slow travel itineraries around Asia! Eventually, however, we both realised that the pandemic was far from over and it would be a while until people would be able to travel again. So, the slow travel Asia idea was put on hold!

COVID Travels

In the meantime, my husband and I had no jobs that kept us in a certain place and we had no permanent residence. So, what do you do? You travel! We became digital nomads if you will!

Over the past year (and counting) we have stayed in Australia, Germany, Greece, Malta, Turkey, Tanzania and South Africa. Travelling during a pandemic has been an experience, to say the least. We have sat through lockdowns and restrictions in different countries, had to chop and change plans last minute due to the ever-changing rules and conditions and went through quite a few PCR tests. However, we don’t travel out of disrespect for the pandemic or to make a point, but out of necessity. I am not going to lie though – it is awesome, too!

Slower is better!

Our current travels made us realise, more than ever, that spending more time in one place is so much more valuable than rushing from highlight to highlight! We got to see so much more and had time to explore beyond the beaten tourist paths. We ate where the locals eat, we (tried) to cook what the locals cook and we did how the locals do! Plus it saved us quite a bit of money too! Obviously, the average holiday-makers don’t have weeks on end to spend, fully immersing themselves in foreign cultures and places. And that’s not necessary either! It is just the idea of slowing down and actually visit a country or an area properly instead of rushing through, ticking boxes, staying an outsider. Visit the attractions, by all means, but dare to get off the beaten track too! Leave your comfort zone, because in the end isn’t that why we travel?

What’s the mission?

With all the experiences over the past year, I couldn’t get the idea of slow travel out of my head! It is a way of travel – and life – that I would love to explore further myself, but also get you excited about! There are so many amazing places to be discovered, so much delicious food to be tried and great ideas to be unearthed! Why not do it at a slower pace to travel more consciously and more sustainably? Once travel resumes we will hopefully appreciate our world a little more, because as we have seen – you never know when it might stop!

Come on the journey!

Anyway, let’s not get carried away! The main point of this blog is to have fun and find some inspiration, it’s not supposed to be a moral compass! If I can encourage you to explore a little deeper and give you some new ideas to make the best of your time away – then my work here is done! I know it’s going to be exciting, so come on the journey with me!
